National Chemistry Day

60 Hahn Elementary School third graders visited Darwin Hall for two hours Monday, celebrating National Chemistry Day by watching mini-fireworks displays over open flames and balloons exploding in a burst of fire, and smashing carnations frozen by liquid nitrogen. The array of explosions, slime creations and periodic table bingo were staged to trigger the third graders’ interest in science. The event was hosted by 30 volunteers mostly from Sonoma State’s Chemistry Club and featured a periodic table of cupcakes among other enticements geared toward the elementary school set.“Anything that is hands-on and is real, I think is much more powerful than reading it in a book,” said Hahn teacher Diane Flohr, who repeatedly instructed her students not to open their slime beakers (filled with colored poly vinyl alcohol) until they got back to school.
