Sonoma State University offers an upper-division program in Napa Valley leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. The program offers a wide variety of courses from the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences. Four to five courses taught by regular SSU faculty are offered each semester, scheduled evenings and weekends for the benefit of the working student. The Liberal Studies major is excellent preparation for students interested in careers in teaching, counseling, social work, public service, law or business as well as graduate work in the social sciences and humanities.

Osher Scholarship Applications (including criteria for applicants) are now available. Deadline for applications for 2009-2010 is Sept. 18, 2009.

NEW STUDENTS and RETURNING STUDENTS, please set up an EARLY BIRD appointment with your advisor, Sandra Feldman, or Bob Karlsrud. YOU MUST seek advising AT LEAST ONCE per semester. Check your SSU email account for updates, deadlines, changes, and important announcements. Barbara.brooks@sonoma.edu , our Administrative Coordinator can also assist you if you have questions or she can direct you to SSU departments on the campus and on the SSU site.

BE SURE to sign up for the WEPT in your JUNIOR YEAR. Get that requirement out of the way early. Check out the WEPT pages on the SSU SITE.

Major Requirements


(All upper division)
  • Sonoma State University requires passing theWritten English Proficiency Test (WEPT) by the second semester of the junior year and completion of 9 units of upper division GE classes. A total of 120 units (including transfer units) are needed to complete the Bachelor of.Arts degree (54 Upper Division Units).
  • Arts & Humanities 16 Units
    Art, Art History, American Multicultural studies, English, Chicano and Latino Studies, Native American Studies, Philosophy
  • Behavioral Sciences 16 Units
    Anthropology, Environmental Studies and Planning, Geography, Gerontology, History, Human Development, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Women's and Gender Studies
  • Physical Sciences 6 Units
    Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics
  • Electives 16 Units
    These courses can be taken from the listed disciplines or in consultation with the program advisor.

Students can obtain an application for admission to the Napa B.A. program by calling Barbara Brooks in Extended Education at 707/664-2691, email barbara.brooks@sonoma.edu It is also available on the SSU website at www.sonoma.edu/exed/applyenroll/napa_reg.html.

Send the completed application, with your $55 application fee, along with two sets of official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended to:
