Life in the Mathematics Department |
|
The Math Department does a lot of things together besides classes. Every October a group of around 20 students and faculty travel to the State of Jefferson Mathematical Congress at Whiskeytown Lake. You can see pictures from the conference at its web site. Department faculty and students also travel to other conferences and meetings, including Mathematical Association of America sectional and national meetings. The Math Club sponsors lots of fun events, like Pi Day and a Pumpkin Carving Contest. Each year in December, many of our students participate in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, the toughest problems competition in North America, if not the world. Each February, teams of math majors and others participate in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling. We like to have parties! Every August we have a opening-of-the-year party to welcome new and returning students; we have a party just before graduation to congratulate our graduates and meet their families; and we have pizza parties after several of our colloquia each semester.
