Stripping the whitewash off 'anti-war' phonies
Drew Bullock, Copy Editor
Protests

Addled princes and princesses of the affluent West, unite! You have nothing to lose but your dignity. Or at least, that’s what I learned from Cindy Sheehan this week. Getting herself arrested by staging a well-choreographed squatting in front of the White House, Ms. Sheehan became an unknowing conduit for the manifestation of a timeless American idiom: if something is worth doing, it’s worth over-doing. Wearing out her welcome not only in D.C. but in the conscience of middle America, Ms. Sheehan witlessly, and without a touch of self-criticism or irony, enunciated the unspoken chorus of the ‘peace movement.’ “The world is watching,” she screeched, and I could have sworn I saw her mouthing, “I hope.” Sometimes all people need is a little attention.

It's good to be free

Tracy Johnson, Opinion Editor

I’ve hit a point that is all too familiar to a college student: I’m broke. At the beginning of every month, I experience hell in the form of bills. Rent, utilities, car payments and car insurance all haunt me.

When I’m stuck in this situation, there is one word that gives me hope, one word that can make every bone in my body tingle: Free.

Ah, that word is such a blessing, I’ll say it again. Free.

If this word hasn’t caught your attention, I don’t know what will.

Being that we are college students, we are always looking for ways to spend less money. Two of the sources that suck up the most of my income are food and drinks. A growing girl has to eat, and eating well means spending money.

Dear Tracy, Opinion Editor,

This is a response to your article “Abstinence-only sex education flunks”.

Where does one begin? First you conceded at the end of your article that “abstinence is the only 100 percent way to avoid getting pregnant or contracting a disease”, as well as inferring that it is common sense with the line “Most of us should know…the only way to limit your risk is to not be sexually active…” You also asked “Why not…educate them on how to keep themselves safe…” I ask you: What is your definition of safe? If there is a risk is it still safe?

You also suggest that it is inevitable that teenagers will have sex as if they have no say in the matter whatsoever.

Dear Editor,

My name is Erica Klescewski and I a member of SAFE on campus and work at the WRC. I just wanted to let you know that in the latest issue of the STAR I was misquoted about confidental resources on campus in the article about sex crimes. I was hoping to rectify this so that students can be provided with the proper information. SAFE and the WRC are currently neither confidential resources on campus, but the counseling center is.SAFE and the WRC are both places to go for information and resources but are not trained counselors. We also refer students to United Against Sexual Assault(UASA)which is the local rape crisis center that provides a 24 hr crisis line. Hopefully a retraction of some sort can be done to correctly inform SSU students. Thank you for your time and help.

The trouble with love is...
Elisabeth Hogue, Production Manager

I often considered myself as a love-aholic. I need and thrive on love and offer up my love as often as I can. I don’t mean the kind of love that could be replaced by something battery operated, but real and deep heart wrenching love.

I find myself to be one of the most confused people out there, but I know that I’m not alone on this. We often ask ourselves about true love; do I have it, do I want it and if I did get it, would I even know? You can ask anyone that has dated or quasi-dated me and find out how truly fickle I am.

Quit worrying and just let it be
Nichole Dehnert, Guest Writer

Life is what happens when you are making plans for the future.  Stressing over what job you are going to obtain, how that job will jumpstart your career, and how successful that career will be are common complaints for the advanced college student (advanced meaning there is a purpose for them taking classes and enrolling beyond going to parties and drinking).
