2007 FACULTY RETREAT

JANUARY 25, 2007

1:00 - 4:00 COMMONS

The Faculty Retreat will begin with five minute vignettes from faculty about successful teaching moments (or not so successful ones that we all can learn from), something innovative to try, tips for keeping a large class engaged, student research activities, service learning opportunities, collaborative learning activities, or others. Through these individual stories of curriculum and pedagogy, across disciplines and careers, can we glean a common Core Identity of Sonoma State? If so, how does this relate to our mission? Can we find a consensus approach to our curriculum and pedagogy that will achieve outcomes implied by our mission? What does it mean to promote active learning (Principle 3 in Cornerstones) and "close human and intellectual relationships among students and faculty" (SSU Mission)? How do we encourage "interactive teaching and learning" (AA Draft Strategic Plan)? These questions are the primary focus of the 2007 Faculty Retreat.

The Chair of the Faculty is planning a dynamic facilitated discussion after the vignettes to gauge whether any agreement already exists or how differing views can be synthesized. All faculty are welcome to attend. Come and talk with your colleagues about teaching and learning at SSU!

High Tea will be served in the mid afternoon.

Please RSVP to laurel.holmstrom@sonoma.edu so logistical planning can be accurate.
