ACADEMIC FREEDOM SUBCOMMITTEE

Membership:

Membership is composed of one elected representative from each of the five schools plus the library, and Student Services Professionals (three-year staggered terms), a student representative selected according to the Associated Students procedures (one-year term), and a member of the Faculty Standards and Affairs Committee (one-year term) as specified in Article V, Section 4.3.1 on subcommittee membership in the Academic Senate By-Laws.

Charge of the Committee:

1. Raise awareness, provide education, and develop programs or forums related to academic freedom for the benefit of the SSU community; and

2. Periodically review the portions of the Faculty Handbook relevant to academic freedom and, in particular, the "Statement of Professional Responsibility," the "Faculty Bill of Rights," and other university documents related to academic freedom, and make any recommendations for change to FSAC; and

3. Develop an SSU policy on academic freedom and forward this policy to FSAC for appropriate action.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUBCOMMITTEE

Charge of the Professional Development Subcommittee

The Professional Development Subcommittee (PDS) is a subcommittee of the Faculty Standards and Affairs Committee.  It is responsible for overseeing the professional development of the university faculty.  This responsibility includes implementation of an orientation program for new tenure-track faculty and sponsorship of workshops on topics related to teaching and professional development.  The PDS is also advisory to the director of the Center for Teaching and Professional Development.

SPONSORED PROGRAMS SUBCOMMITTEE

Charge of the Sponsored Programs Subcommittee

The primary role of the Sponsored Programs subcommittee is to develop and implement policies relating to faculty participation in sponsored research and other extramurally funded curricular projects. It is the final review body for all campus grant programs requiring faculty evaluation. As such, it serves as a liaison between the various units of the campus and the administration.

This subcommittee shall:

1. Serve the faculty by informing them of the activities of the Office of Sponsored Programs and by interpreting grant guidelines. The subcommittee also sets up review procedures for campus-wide grant review processes (e.g., the Small Grant Program);

2. It shall serve the administration and the SSU Academic Foundation, Inc., by responding to requests for priority recommendations on items that require a broadly based faculty consensus;

3. The subcommittee sshall respond to requests for assistance and review of grants activities from individual faculty, departments or Schools;

4. The Chair of the subcommittee on Sponsored Programs shall report, as requested, to the Educational Policies Committee on activities of the subcommittee; and

5. Policy statements regarding sponsored program activities developed by the subcommittee will be forwarded to the EPC for consideration.
