The Sonoma State University TRIO Training grant cycle is from October 1, 2014 until September 30, 2016. All TRIO staff are eligible to undertake any of the trainings. Being accept into a training at a particular location is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Priority 1 TRIO Training emphasizes best practices in record keeping, reporting student and program performance, and evaluating project performance. The training assists TRIO staffs in preparing for site visits and A-133 audits. Trainees also examine ways to implement internal evaluations and data-driven decision making processes.
Priority 2 TRIO Training examines budget management and the statutory and regulatory requirements for opertation of TRIO projects. Staff and attendees closely examine the regulations which govern their programs. Through practicum activities and case studies, trainees will be able to cite regulations to support the decisions they make in their projects. The budget management component focuses on allowable and unallowable costs, projecting spending, and improving institutional relations.
The Priority 5 TRIO Training focuses on recruiting and serving TRIO participants, especially those who are deemed "high risk" or "hard to reach" as defined in the Higher Education Opportunity Act. Specifically, the training provides proven strategies for recruiting and serving hard to reach populations–including students who are limited English proficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students who are individuals with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youths, students who are foster care youth, or other disconnected students.

A training application must be submitted in order to receive U.S. Dept. of Education approval. Confirmation will be delivered to the email address included in the application. Several staff members from a TRIO program are welcome and encouraged to attend, but each must submit a training application.
