WHAT'S THE BUZZ: ON THE MAKE-UP OF RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS AND PARENTS WEEKEND

----------------------------------------

Sonoma’s residential community is growing due to the desire of students to be housed where they attend college. Some SSU housing statistics:

1. We currently have 25% of our students living on campus (1976 out of 7950. This is NOT the final census headcount of students. That number will be known in a few weeks but it is not expected to change dramatically.)

2. When Phase 1 of Beaujolais Village is completed in Fall 2003, there will be 350 students housed there.

3. When Phase 2 of Beaujolais Village is completed in Fall 2004, an additional 350 students will be housed in that village. That will bring the total in Beaujolais to 700. At that time, and IF Sonoma’s enrollment remains approximately the same, there will be 34% of the student body housed on campus.

Having a residential campus (Sonoma has the highest percentage in the CSU for the number of students living on campus compared to the number of students who are enrolled), requires a much richer activity level than the University has had in previous years. To give students (and their parents) that richness, involves many events and activities such as concerts, plays, trips to San Francisco and other locations. A request from students and their parents that has evolved into a university-wide effort is Parents’ Weekend which takes place this year on October 18-20.

Parents’ Weekend is an all-campus effort coordinated through the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Residential Life, but many questions are being asked of faculty and staff who may need more information in order to answer those questions.
