What's the Buzz on campus emergencies?

There has been some confusion in the past regarding what to do about a
campus emergency. Should an emergency situation occur on campus, dial 911
from any campus phone which will connect the caller directly to Police
Services, according to Lieutenant George Ellington (it is no longer
necessary to dial "2911"). However, if an individual has a question
regarding parking or would like to make a report, they can contact police
and parking services directly by dialing the business line in Police
Services, x4-2143.

Another important number to remember is the SSU emergency information line
at 1-888-533-5388. This line is provided to notify individuals of campus
closures in the event of an emergency such as a flood or earthquake. The
line, which can be reached from on or off campus, connects callers to a
recording, which will have information on the status of campus. This may be particularly important to the campus when determining if campus is open or closed. Additionally, radio stations in Sonoma and surrounding counties will broadcast information should it become necessary to close campus.
Telephone stickers with the phone numbers above have been distributed
throughout campus as well as the residential community. They have also been
placed on all campus payphones. To request a sticker from Police Services,
call x4-2143. Lt. Ellington recommends that campus community members keep
one at home and at work (particularly in light of the emergency information
line).

Additionally, 25 new emergency phones have recently been installed on
campus. In an emergency, press the red button on the phone and the light at
the top of the stanchion will rotate and flash.

At this time the emergency phones do not tell Police Services a location of
where they are being activated; that is being changed so that the location can be found without speaking to the person who called. Until that time, the caller must give their location.

Questions may be directed to Police Services, x4-2143.
