What's the Buzz on the Green Music Center Complex?

Last week, the SSU student newspaper, the STAR, published a story entitled Green Music Center Re-envisions Completion. The story highlighted the changes of the project from the Green Music Center, (GMC) to the Green Music Center Complex. For the past couple of years, the GMC consisted primarily of a 1400 seat concert hall a lobby, and appropriate back-of-house support space. Donor contributions have generously provided the funds for this part of the project.

Proposition 55 (the Public Education Facilities Bond of 2004) will provide SSU with just over $16 million for the campus capital outlay program during the 2005-2006 fiscal year. These dollars will be used to construct a Music and Faculty Office Building adjacent to the GMC and part of the Green Music Center Complex. The Music and Faculty Office Building satisfies current facility deficits in the University’s music program, adds campus-wide lecture space and partially addresses the campus need for additional faculty offices. The donor-funded Green Music Center will be combined with the Music and Faculty Office building to enhance the University’s Performing Arts Program and engage the community in a shared resource for the performance of the musical arts.

While the STAR article was generally accurate, further information with respect to the third aspect of the Green Music Center Complex, the Conference Center, is needed. The $7,000,000 for this project will not be borrowed by the Sonoma State Enterprises but rather by the CSU via the System-Wide Revenue Bond program. General Fund appropriations are not a source of repayment for this bond. Funds to repay this loan will come from a special fee included in every ticket sold for all non-student events held at the donor-funded Green Music Center as well as revenue generated via non-campus rentals of the donor-funded Green Music Center including conferences, lectures, special events, weddings, banquets, etc. In accordance with CSU policy, Sonoma State Enterprises will pay rent for space it utilizes in the Complex for retail and dining activities.
