What's the Buzz on .... the Sculptures Around Campus
You may have noticed several sculptures that have appeared on campus
over the past week. They were created by the students of Professor Jann
Nunn in her intermediate and advanced sculpture classes. These pieces
are displayed around campus anywhere from one day to two weeks and are
intended to evoke thought and discussion.
There are many pieces throughout the campus, some of which are:
A blue "rock" in the Stevenson Quad. This monolith
was inspired by Allison Negley's interest and research into ancient standing
stones and stone circles put into a contemporary context. Location: Stevenson
Hall inner Quad, top of stairs
A 10 foot tall, rough-hewn wooden cruciform located on
a grassy knoll, was designed and constructed by Joey Castor. It features
an American flag and the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Location:
on the grass near the gym
A display of "walkers" by Robin Messinna-Burgert
is a figurative sculpture sans the figure. It addresses not only mobility,
but pack mentality. Walkers, typically used as aids for the infirmed,
make a distrubing display when viewed in the context of a university campus
where most students are quite able-bodied. Location: Just southwest of
the Art Building, on the lawn
Says Professor Jann Nunn, "I wanted students to make something for
the SSU campus, looking at it as a sculpture park. The pieces are unique
and thought-provoking."
