Learning Activity, Step 1, for Part 1

Learning Activities 01: Step 1

Complete by end of the 1st week of Part 01:

Select one of the following learning activities to do. Use the forum for Learning Activities for Part 1 in WebCT for Nurs 400A or Nurs 400B to post what you do in the activity.

1. Think of the last "fact" you learned with respect to clinical nursing practice. Try to discover the ultimate source of this information. Was it tradition ("This is the way it's always been done")? Authority ("Dr. So-and-so said so")? Logical reasoning ("This has been inferred from previous observations")? Or systematic research ("An empirical investigation discovered this to be the case")?

2. Suppose you were interested in studying the effect of a hysterectomy on women's sexuality and sexual identity. Briefly outline what you might do in the following tasks, as outlined in Chapter 2:
  • What hypotheses might you formulate?
  • Select a research design
  • Identify the population
  • How would you measure or operationalize the variables?
  • Where would you get a sample?

3. Suppose you wanted to do a qualitative study of a couple's decision to seek treatment for infertility. What types of sites and settings might be appropriate for such a study? Describe some steps you might have to take to gain entree into appropriate research settings.

4. When the costs and benefits of a proposed study are essentially balanced, how should the researcher decide whether to proceed?
