Overview of Chapter 2
Part One

Read about the job of a nurse researcher.

Overview of Chapter 2: Comprehending the Research Process.

The purpose of Chapter 2 is to provide you with some basic groundwork for dealing with the remainder of the text. There are two main parts to this chapter:

The first part introduces research terminology that recurs throughout the text. A firm grounding in basic research terms should facilitate your ability to grasp more complex methodologic concepts later in the book, and to begin to read research reports. The text distinguishes the basic terminology used by qualitative and quantitative researchers--for example, subject versus informant. A chart summarizing differences in terminology is included.

The second part of the chapter provides an overview of the steps that a researcher undertakes in conducting a study. Separate actions are devoted to describing the general progression of activities in qualitative and quantitative studies.

Study Chapter 2 in the text, pages 29-50.
