This unusually diverse school combines education in the arts and humanities
with student career goals. In the arts, instructional programs include
Applied Arts, Art, Creative
Writing,
Music, and Theatre
Arts. Programs in the humanities include American
Multicultural Studies, English,
Modern Languages and Literatures, California
Cultural Studies, Communications
Studies, Chicano Latino Studies,
Native American Studies, and Philosophy.
The School of Arts and Humanities also houses the Hutchins
School of Liberal Studies and a variety of pre-law programs.
The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies and the Chicano Latino Studies
Program offer subject matter preparation for students who intend to
enter teaching credential programs and to teach in elementary schools.
A number of departments, including Art, English, Foreign Languages,
and Music, offer subject matter preparation programs that lead to secondary,
or single subject, teaching credential programs. The English program
offers MA work in Literature, Creative Writing, The Teaching of Writing,
and Writing for the Media.
The School also oversees the Center
for Performing Arts, which features Music and Theatre Arts departmental
productions as well as guest artists and touring events. The Art
Gallery, with nationally recognized shows and exhibits; the Sonoma
Film Institute, which brings to SSU a variety and range of films seldom
matched on any campus; the Writers Lecture Series, which has brought
such individuals as Tom Wolfe, Edward Albee, Nobel Laureate Czeslaw
Milosz, Maya Angelou, and James Burke, among others; KSUN,
the campus radio station; The
Star, the student newspaper; the highly regarded literary
journal, Mandala.
The faculty of the School are committed to excellence in teaching and
a strong academic advising program. Special emphasis is placed on pro
grams that combine traditional arts and humanities majors with career
oriented minors. Such programs include Art and the Performing Arts with
Management, English with Science and Technical Writing, Foreign Languages
with International Studies, Music with Recording and Computer Theory,
American Multicultural Studies with Criminal Justice Adrninistration
and Management, among others. Supporting career goals while building
upon the arts and humanities, the School provides an education that
allows students to develop their ability to think and communicate, the
best preparation for a changing future.
