GLOSSARY AND TERMS
A
ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATORS - A working title which refers to administrators
who report to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs including
the Associate Provosts, the Associate Vice Presidents, the deans, and
associate deans. Normally, academic administrators are members of the
Management Personnel Plan and have retreat rights to a faculty position.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS - The organizational portion of the university headed
by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. This area includes
academic schools, the academic departments related to instruction, and
academic related support units such as admissions and records, scheduling,
international students, and so on. Several instructionally related service
units, such as Information Technology and Media Services, are not within
the organizational structure of Academic Affairs.
ACADEMIC CALENDAR - The Academic Calendar, which is based on the semester
system, is published in the Catalog. The calendar specifically includes
the dates that the academic term begins and ends. Examples of other dates
listed in the calendar are the deadlines for registration, admissions,
the adding and dropping of classes, and semester examinations.
ACADEMIC EMPLOYEE - Title 5 defines an academic employee as anyone engaged
either (1) primarily in instruction who is employed and compensated on
the basis of class and rank or (2) in very closely related professional
activities such as librarians and student services professionals in the
academically related category.
ACADEMIC FREEDOM - The ability of members of the academic community to
be free to pursue truth as well as personal and intellectual development.
A necessary condition for such pursuit is an acceptance of the spirit
of inquiry and an appreciation for diverse ideas, viewpoints, cultures,
and lifestyles. This condition must exist in both the classroom and the
overall campus environment. The 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic

ACADEMIC HOLIDAYS - Holidays designated in the Academic Calendar and
the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
ACADEMIC RANK - A designation of rank assigned to faculty members at
the time of appointment or promotion and is dependent upon the qualifications
of the faculty member.
ACADEMIC SENATE - The deliberative body of faculty governance on each
CSU campus.
ACADEMIC SENATE, CSU - The deliberative body of faculty governance for
the entire CSU with representatives from each campus.
ACADEMIC TERM - See Semester
ACADEMIC YEAR - The period which includes the Fall Semester and the Spring
Semester as noted in the academic calendar. (Summer Session is excluded)
ACADEMIC YEAR APPOINTMENTS -An appointment to the faculty on an academic
year or nine-month basis.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH OR DISMEMBERMENT INSURANCE - An employer paid $50,000
accidental death or dismemberment insurance plan for eligible faculty.
ACCIDENT OR SUDDEN ILLNESS - An emergency situation that results in urgently
needed first aid which should be applied immediately and the University
Police contacted. These situations require that documentation be completed
by the supervisor, the employee, and other appropriate offices, such as
Environmental Health and Safety or the Payroll and Benefits Office.
ACCREDITATION - The type of recognition held by an educational institution.
SSU is reviewed by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
A number of SSU programs also receive accreditation by organizations specific
to their discipline.
ADDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT - Any CSU employment that is in addition to the
primary or normal assignment of a faculty member and funded by the general
fund, or non-general funds including CSU auxiliaries.
ADDRESS, CHANGE IN - Any changes in the mailing address of an employee
at their residence. All important communications including the annual
statement of wages paid and taxes withheld, letters of reappointment,
letters of promotion, PERS information, and other official documents are
mailed to the last known mailing address.
ADJUNCT FACULTY - The appointment of an individual with professional
distinction and achievement who does not wish a conventional appointment
or monetary award. Adjunct faculty are appointed as temporary and voluntary
employees. Teaching classes, giving scheduled lectures, conducting laboratories,
and directing student projects are among the services that may warrant
an adjunct appointment. Adjunct faculty are covered by Worker's Compensation.
ADMINISTRATOR - An employee serving in a position designated as management
or supervisory in accordance with HEERA. Only individuals holding an appointment
under the Management Personnel Plan may be referred to as an "administrator."
When the CBA uses the language "appropriate administrator,"
it is referring to an individual who holds an MPP appointment.
ADMINISTRATORS, REVIEW OF - A comprehensive performance review of an
Administrator which includes input from faculty, students, alumni, administrators,
and other appropriate individuals or groups.
ADMINISTRATORS, TENURE OF - An administrator may have been awarded tenure
as a faculty member in a department prior to the administrative (MPP)
appointment or may be granted tenure in a faculty position simultaneously
with the administrative appointment, or may be given a probationary appointment
in a department and subsequently awarded tenure after going through a
probationary review process. All administrative positions in the Management
Personnel Plan are at the pleasure of the President. Tenure may not be
granted as an administrator. See Also: Academic Administrators
ADOPTION OF A CHILD, LEAVE FOR - See Maternity/Paternity Leave
ADVISING - Assisting students in selecting appropriate courses and programs,
establishing effective mentor relationships, using support services effectively,
and planning for their future. Faculty members advise students on academic
matters and refer students to the Counseling Center and Student Health
Center for issues of a personal nature. An advisee folder kept on a student
by an adviser, an instructor, or maintained by the departmental office
constitutes an academic record subject to review by the student. Any notes
added to that folder become a part of the record. Access to the advisee
folders must be limited to those with a legitimate need to have access
such as the adviser, the department chair and those who may provide the
record maintenance such as a departmental administrative assistant. See

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION - A program which seeks to ensure the diversification
of its faculty and staff to reflect the population of the region served
as well as the society at large. The AA Program institutes measures to
ensure that all qualified candidates have an equal opportunity to be considered
carefully and that discrimination does not occur in the recruitment, selection,
promotion, or administration of related programs, such as salary, position
assignments, training and development, advancement opportunity, etc.
AGENCY FEE - A requirement of an employee to pay a union for representation.
In 1999, California Senate Bill 645 amended HEERA and initiated the requirement
of faculty within the CSU who are not members of the California Faculty
Association to pay an agency fee to the CFA for its representation. This
fee is deducted automatically from the monthly pay warrant. The fee must
be less than the amount of CFA membership.
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS (AAUP) - Founded in 1915,
this national organization represents the interests of college and university
faculty members. The mission of the AAUP is to advance academic freedom,
to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education,
and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. The
AAUP publishes the REDBOOK that contains copies of its documents, reports,
and policy statements.
AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT - The Americans with Disabilities Act
of 1990 prohibits employers from discriminating against qualified individuals
with disabilities in job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement,
compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions and privileges
of employment. A qualified employee or applicant with a disability is
an individual who, with or without reasonable accommodation, can perform
the essential functions of the position in question.
ANNUITIES, TAX SHELTERED OR TAX DEFERRED - Programs which are voluntary
in nature and may result in the reduction of federal and state income
tax liability and may provide an additional source of retirement income.
ARBITRATION - A process which is used to resolve disputes. The CBA provides
for binding arbitration on matters relating to the interpretation and
implementation of the CBA. Only the CFA, as the exclusive bargaining agent,
may carry a case to arbitration on behalf of a faculty member.
ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS - Agreements regarding the transferability of
credit for a specific course between the university and campuses of the
California Community Colleges, the California State University and the
University of California campuses. Course to course agreements identify
a particular course or sequence of courses that is comparable to a specific
course or sequence of courses at the university. Students receive comparable
credit depending on the status of the course when the student completes
it. These agreements are never a complete listing of all courses being
offered at the sending institution. See Also: California Articulation

ASSIGNED TIME - A special approved assignment used to reduce the normal
faculty instructional workload per semester. Detailed records must be
maintained on all assigned time. A faculty member may be given assigned
time for specified activities such as an unusually heavy advising assignment,
active participation on or leadership of committees, extended curriculum
studies or revisions, and preparation of detailed accreditation reports.
ASSOCIATED STUDENTS INCORPORATED - A nonprofit corporation whose membership
consists of all students enrolled at the university. ASI is owned and
governed by students for students. Students are encouraged to participate
in Associated Student activities, especially student government and to
vote in all student elections.
