GLOSSARY AND TERMS

DAYS - A definition in the CBA which generally refers to calendar days,
rather than work days, unless otherwise specified.
DEATH IN THE FAMILY - See Bereavement Leave
DEFENSIVE DRIVER TRAINING - A multimedia classroom session to ensure that
employees are aware of defensive driver techniques and are informed of
applicable changes in the California Vehicle Code. This course is provided
by the university to employees who are authorized to operate state vehicles
or claim mileage for operating a privately owned automobile on state business.
Those who drive on state business not more than once a month are not required
to attend the Defensive Driving Course.
DEMOTION - To lower an individual's academic rank or step on the salary
schedule. Demotion is an available sanction through the disciplinary process
described in the CBA.
DENTAL PLAN - Health coverage for dental care. Enhanced dental benefits
are offered to eligible faculty members and their families.
DEPARTMENT CHAIR - The head of an academic department who serves at the
pleasure of the President. Normally, department chairs are tenured faculty
members with the faculty rank of Associate Professor or Professor, and
receive additional compensation for their duties as chair as well as receiving
assigned time.
DEPENDENT CARE PROGRAM - A benefit program that allows employees to pay
for dependent care with pre-tax dollars.
DIFFERENCE IN PAY LEAVE - A paid professional leave granted to eligible
faculty. Faculty members on a DIP leave receive the difference between
the first step of the Instructor rank and their current salary for the
period of the leave.
DIRECT DEPOSIT - Electronic transfer of an employee's pay warrant directly
to a designated bank or credit union account. These transactions must
be initiated in writing by the employee.
DISABILITY INSURANCE - A disability income protection plan provided to
eligible faculty.
DISABILITY RETIREMENT - Retirement of a vested faculty member that is
required due to a disabling condition.
DISCLOSURE OF IMPROPER GOVERNMENT PROCEDURES - The reporting of improper
government activities through appropriate channels. It is illegal to retaliate
against a university employee or applicant for employment for having disclosed
improper government activities.
DISMISSAL - Separation of a temporary, probationary, or tenured faculty
member for cause from university employment as the result of a disciplinary
action.
DISRUPTIVE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR BY STUDENTS - See Classes, Disruptive Behavior
DOMESTIC PARTNERS, BENEFITS FOR - An Assembly Bill - 26 Statutes of 1999
- that provides for domestic partners to be eligible for a CalPERS health
plan, dental plan and vision plan. The enrollee must provide a copy of
the Declaration of Domestic Partnership issued by the state and signed
Statements of Financial Liability to the Payroll and Benefits Office.
DRINKING AGE, LEGAL - The legal age for drinking alcoholic beverages
in California is 21 years old.
DRIVER TRAINING, DEFENSIVE - See Defensive Driver Training
DUE PROCESS RIGHTS - The legal protection that is afforded to all university
employees and students by our legal system. These rights provide for orderly
processes where an individual is given notice of an accusation, provided
an opportunity to be heard, and to enforce and protect their rights under
university policies, including a CBA, and law. Personnel actions regarding
faculty may only be based on official university findings that are contained
in the appropriate personnel file.
