E

EDUCATION CODE - The compilation of legislative enactments relating to education. It is part of the larger statutory codes of the State of California.

ELECTIVES - Courses/units a student selects to complete the total unit requirement for the baccalaureate degree.

E-MAIL - Electronic mail system provided to faculty. These accounts can be accessed from any of the networked computers on campus or from a home computer with a modem. Faculty use the e-mail system for communication in order to save time and reduce use of paper. Students also obtain free e-mail accounts for consultation with faculty and students and for their academic work. E-mail requires the use of the same principles of courtesy, collegiality, and accuracy that apply in other forms of written communication.

EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS - An appointment of a faculty member, which has been approved by the dean and AVP of Faculty Affairs, to teach class(es) that are not able to be taught by prior assignment due to illness, accident or similar unforeseen situations.

EMERGENCY CALLS (911) - Report of a situation in which a life and/or property are threatened. To report an emergency situation dial 911 on a campus phone to reach campus security. The police dispatcher will obtain specific information, such as location and life/safety issues you observe and send whatever aid is necessary.

EMERGENCY LEAVE - Leave from work that is required when a natural catastrophe or an emergency situation places the health or safety of the faculty member in jeopardy. The President may grant an emergency leave with pay, normally of a short duration, to a faculty member.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS - The Sonoma State University Emergency Plan provides a framework for response to extraordinary emergency situations that could impact University operations. The plan describes the emergency response system that directs the immediate response to and recovery from a significant campus event or regional event that impacts the University. The primary goal of the plan is to provide a coordinated response that protects life, property, and the environment.

EMPLOYMENT AFTER RETIREMENT - Appointment as a temporary faculty member after entering retirement. Employment after retirement may have an effect on retirement benefits and Social Security.

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION - Completion of the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) which is a federally mandated form that is intended to verify an individual's legal right to work in the United States. The federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, requires that all individuals who are being employed provide documentation, such as proof of American citizenship or appropriate documentation from the Immigration and Naturalization Service which permits the individual to work in the United States.

ENDOWED CHAIRS AND PROFESSORSHIPS - A faculty position, with or without staff or administrative assistance, supported by income from an endowed fund established as a gift or gifts from private sources. The university may create endowed chairs or professorships to recognize the interests and contributions of benefactors and/or to honor particularly distinguished members of the faculty.

EQUITY SALARY INCREASE - Granting a salary increase to a faculty member to address equity considerations.

EXAMINATIONS, FINAL - See Final Examinations

EXECUTIVE ORDERS - Orders issued by the Chancellor of the CSU to implement, interpret, or give administrative effect to a provision of federal or state law, or a policy of the Board of Trustees. These orders are deemed Trustee and university policy to be implemented, monitored, and maintained by the Office of the President.

EXEMPT EMPLOYEES - Employees in positions designated as exempt under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. All faculty members in the CSU are in exempt positions.

EXHIBITS - Instructional materials and equipment which are displayed by instructors in connection with classes. Exhibits may include works of art, writing, research and special projects completed by students and faculty.
