SECTION 10
GLOSSARY AND TERMS
G
GENERAL COUNSEL - The legal staff of the CSU which is maintained in the
Chancellor's Office. The legal staff represents the campuses of the CSU
in matters of litigation.
GENERAL SALARY INCREASE (GSI) - An increase applicable across-the-board
to all faculty unit employees. These increases are subject to collective
bargaining.
GOVERNMENT CODE - The compilation of legislative enactments referring
to matters relating to the conduct of state business, the administration
of state agencies, and employees of the State of California or its independent
institutions. It is part of the larger statutory codes of the State of
California.
GRADE APPEALS - The process available to students
who wish to protest a grade received in a course. This process is governed
by CSU Executive Order 320. When grade disputes cannot be settled informally,
students have the right to file an appeal and faculty members cooperate
fully with the grade appeal process. Instructors provide the appeal officer
with evidence to support the grade, such as a detailed syllabus, instructions,
sample work from the student, attendance rosters, and demonstrate consistent
grading patterns through the grade book and other evidence. See also:
Student Privacy Rights.
GRADE BOOKS - A record maintained by the faculty which lists the various
scores and marks of students registered in the class as well as notes
that may have been used to arrive at a final evaluation. These materials
are confidential. Students are entitled to receive information concerning
how their own grades were determined without actual access to the physical
record. See also: Student Privacy Rights.
GRADE REPORTS - The only official record of grades is the grade roster
which is submitted to the Admissions and Record's Office at the end of
each semester. Since this document lists all students enrolled in the
course and the grades that they have received, it is not subject to review
by any student. See also: Student Privacy Rights.
GRADES, POSTING OF - The posting of grades, usually in a public place
such as on the instructor's bulletin board, for student review at the
end of the semester. The decision of whether or not to post grades is
left to the discretion of each instructor. To maintain confidentiality
and protect students right to privacy, grades are not to be posted with
(1) the names of students, or (2) using complete Social Security numbers
in alphabetical order or (3) any other form of identification which would
easily identify a student. If partial student identification numbers are
used, it is recommended that the list be in numerical, rather than alphabetical
order. See also: Student Privacy Rights.
GRIEVANCE - The grievance process is a formalized means of conflict resolution
provided for in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A grievance is an
allegation that the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement have
been violated, misapplied, or misinterpreted by the President or administrative
officers. A faculty member has a right to file a grievance if he/she feels
that their rights have been violated. There shall be no retaliation against
an individual for filing a grievance.
