RECORDING IN CLASS - Tape or video recording class sessions for study purposes. Except for students with disabilities who may require recording class sessions, a the decision to allow recording belongs to the instructor. Faculty should provide a clear statement of policy in the course syllabus and enforce it in a consistent manner

REENTRY STUDENT - A student, usually over 25 years in age and reentering the academic community.

RELEASE TIME - See Assigned Time

RESIGNATION - Notice to the university in the event of ending the employment relationship. A written notice should be addressed to the President of the University with copies to the Provost, the appropriate dean, the department chair, the Faculty Affairs Office, and the Payroll and Benefits Office. This notice will facilitate the process that is required to initiate the issuance of the final pay warrant and initiate a replacement. Faculty should include a specific effective date of resignation, preferably after the final day of the academic year.

RETIREMENT, ELIGIBILITY - An employee who retires under the PERS must have (1) a minimum of five (5) years full time service under PERS or its equivalent, and (2) have attained the age of fifty (50). Also see: California Public Employees Retirement System.

RETIREMENT, MANDATORY - The federal Age Discrimination Act prohibits mandatory retirement based on age. There is no mandatory retirement age in the California State University.

RETIREMENT NOTICE - Written notice provided by a faculty member indicating their election to leave employment for the purpose of retirement. The notice should provide reasonable timeline for the university to prepare for coverage of courses anticipated in the next year.

RETIREMENT PLANNING - Participation in retirement workshops and consultation with financial planners and retirement counselors provided by CalPERS and others that enable faculty to make advanced plans for the financial aspects of retirement and the psychological impact of retirement.

RETREAT RIGHTS - Upon appointment to an academic administrative position, the employee may retain existing tenure rights in the academic department or receive a faculty appointment in a department which may lead to tenure status that will then provide retreat rights. In such cases, should the individual vacate the administrative post, he/she would have the right to remain on the faculty as a tenured member of the department. The term "retreat rights" is the local terminology for this process.
