OUTSIDE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES, RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROJECTS

In this section:

Outside Professional Activities

Faculty may participate in a variety of outside professional activities which may result from personal or professional leaves from faculty appointments and from employment outside of the SSU or CSU. The outside professional activities may be on either a full or part time basis. Faculty who wish a leave are required to complete an application and the leave request must be processed and approved. For additional information see topics in: Section 5, Absence From Work Assignments, and, Leaves.

Paid Consulting or Related Outside (of CSU) Employment

Employment outside of the CSU is governed by the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Employment within the CSU, for example a part-time appointment at SSU and an additional appointment at another CSU campus, is not considered Outside Employment and those CSU appointments should be coordinated through the Faculty Affairs Office and comply with Article 36, Additional Employment, of the CBA.

Rights Of Human Subjects

In 1974, the National Research Act, Public Law 93-348 Section 474, called for all institutions applying for federal funding to have on-site permanent review boards which "review biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects in order to protect the rights of the human subjects of such research."

At SSU, the administrative authority for the protection of human subjects, in funded as well as non-funded research, has been delegated to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Provost has appointed the Institutional Review Board (IRB), which works under the sponsorship of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, to ensure the protection of the rights of human subjects.

Sponsored Projects

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) provides services in support of faculty and staff as they seek funding for research, scholarship, creative activities and special programs. The basic mission of the ORSP is to provide assistance and resources to encourage faculty and staff to pursue internal and external funding for educational and academic activities. Office services include announcing internal and external grant opportunities, providing advice and assistance in developing ideas, in writing proposals and budgets; and in reviewing and expediting the campus Proposal Endorsement forms. The ORSP also supports the Faculty Subcommittee on Sponsored Programs, a subcommittee of the Academic Senate, in the administration of internal grant programs.
