Sonoma State fosters connections between students' experiences and those of diverse local communities influenced by global migrations. Through internships, service learning, learning centers, lectures and cultural events, students participate in the lives and concerns of local communities. Some examples include:
- Holocaust Lecture Series
- Center for Culture, Gender and Sexuality promotes social awareness of all students and creates mutual opportunities of exchange with local communities
- Language & Culture Learning Center assists students in learning Spanish, a commonly used language of many local community members. It also aids in the teaching of French and German
- Bay Area Francophile List is a weekly calendar of cultural events of interest to francophones and francophiles of the Bay Area, offering information on cinema, art, theater, music, conversation groups, classes, etc. and servicing the entire San Francisco Bay Area
