44 SSU Student Athletes earn
All-Academic status 2006-07

WALNUT CREEK, Calif- Of the 392 CCAA student-athletes to earn All-Academic status for the 2006-07 academic year, 44 wore the navy and columbia blue of Sonoma State University. SSU finished third among member institutions and saw their total increase from 37 all-academic recipients in 2005-06.

UC San Diego led the way for the second consecutive year with 66 honorees. Chico State secured 45 spots on the team, just one more than Sonoma State's total of 44.

The SSU Men's Soccer team led the way with nine on the All-Academic team.

"I am really proud of our academic success." said head coach Marcus Ziemer, "We have tried to recruit quality student-athletes that can be successful in the class room as well as on the soccer field and this group shows that it can be done."

The Men's Soccer team also posted a 2006-07 cumulative Team GPA of just over 3.00. "In the beginning of the season the team made it an academic goal to have the overall team cumulative GPA over 3.00 and it is great that we accomplished it," says Ziemer. "The older players really help the underclassmen and encourage them to make academic success a priority".

To earn all-academic status, a student-athletes must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher in a minimum of 24 semester/36 quarter units. The student-athlete must also participate in a CCAA sponsored sport, meaning SSU's men's tennis and women's water polo teams did not qualify.
