Welcome to the Department of Art and Art History at Sonoma State University

For thirty years, Sonoma State University, Department of Art and Art History has been the hub of visual art on campus and in Sonoma County. As a center of creativity and experimentation, the department provides students with the foundation for a lifetime of visual arts study and presence. Our majors offer in-depth education in technique, concept and history of art.

  • Beginning Thursday, September 3, with a gala reception from 5-7: FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHY: SELECTIONS FROM THE GALLUS SWEET COLLECTION, features 59 photographs from the collection of Sonoma County residents, Fay Gallus and Richard Sweet. Spanning much of the history of photography, artists featured include Ansel Adams, Eugene Atget, Edward Burtynsky, Imogen Cunningham, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tina Modotti, Eadweard Muybridge, and Carrie Mae Weems, among many others.

Department Information

  • $10.00 single lab fee is charged one time per semester to each student enrolled in a studio art course. The fee is to support all studio art classes through the purchase of clean up and disposable safety equipment in bulk through one centralized fee.
  • Is your class planning a Fieldtrip. Get the FIELDTRIP Forms Here! Everyone needs to complete the Emergency Release Form. If you are driving, then complete the other two in the packet as well.
