The Fall 2009 Visiting Artist Lecture Series will be one of the best ever. The title, “Arts N’ Crafts”, is meant to provoke nostalgic recollections of summer camp and after school activities via modest material and the development of eye hand coordination to create trinkets for loved ones. So what happens when adults try to do the same? “Craft” and its accompanying communities can easily develop into various forms of xenophobic tribalism or slavish virtuosity that splinter off into ever more myopic enclaves of specialization. This semester's series will be focusing on the role of 'Craft' in contemporary art.

The artists in this series have chosen inventive paths that transcend the tired question 'is it art or craft?’ Their non-conventional use of traditional 'craft' materials, techniques and training, creates a hybridization that engages, mimics, sometime even taunts the craft world, to squarely address contemporary art concerns. This semester's series plans to include; mixed media/textile artists, Lisa Solomom with Monica Carilao, New York based sculptor, Jim Christensen, painter, Squeak Carnwath who will be interviewed onstage by our own Mark Perlman Professor of Painting, CCA Metal Arts and interim Chair, Curtis Arima, Chair of Sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute John Roloff, ceramic provocateur, John de Fazio, and, musician and artist, Ron Nagle. As an added bonus, Carlos de Villasante our new Paining Professor has agreed to give a lecture on September 8th.

We look forward to seeing you at the lectures this fall.
