Associated Students Productions is proud to bring a special poetry event to campus. ASP Poetry Nite featuring internationally renowned slam poet Carlos Andrés Goméz will be on Friday, November 6th at 7:00PM in the Student Union MPR. This event is free to all and refreshments will be provided.
Carlos Andrés Goméz is much more than just an award-winning poet and actor from New York City. He is a former social worker for Harlem and the south Bronx but now he is a public school teacher in Philadelphia and New York. He has performed at over 100 colleges and universities and has toured through North America, Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa. Gomez also co-starred along side Denzel Washington in Spike Lee's "Inside Man" and has performed on Broadway. Gomez has appeared on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry Jam" where he won the "Favorite Poet" Award chosen by the viewers. He is a two-time National Poetry Slam Finalist - once as a member of the renowned Nuyorican Poets Cafe's Slam Team
Gomez possesses a charisma that affects every person in the room. It is not difficult to feel his passion for poetry through his positive energy while he performs. His talent for words is remarkable and will be sure to leave you thinking differently about everything from race, music, and love to world issues and education. His most popular piece "What's Genocide?" speaks about a moment he shared with one of students when he brought up the topic of the Holocaust in the classroom. "Distinctly Beautiful" describes struggles that women and young girls go through and the unhealthy image they are constantly trying to achieve. To hear for yourself, you can find his videos on YouTube under the search "Carlos Andres Gomez" or on www.laymanlyric.com/carlos_gomez.
