Practical Computer Competency Requirement (PCCR) Examination

Computer Competency

All pre-business majors must demonstrate practical computer proficiency prior to enrolling in BUS 211 (Managerial Statistics), BUS 230A ( Financial Accounting), or any upper-division business core class.

Students must demonstrate basic, practical computer proficiency in the following areas:

  • Basic Spreadsheet Skills (Microsoft EXCEL)
  • Microsoft Windows Operating System & the Internet

Computer proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of the Single Part Practical Computer Competency Requirement (PCCR) Exam with a grade of "PASS".

PCCR Exams are given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Examination sessions will be administered over three consecutive days: Wednesday, thursday, and Friday, over the following periods: [1] Fourth week of October, [2] Concluding week of instructions in December, and [3] Fourth week of March (subject to change, depending on the spring semester vacation schedule).

Examination dates and times will usually be posted for registration about four weeks prior to the administration of exam. All students are advised, and it is each and every student's own responsibility, to sit for and pass the exam as early in their pre-business program as possible.

All components of the Practical Computer Competency Requirement Examination will be examined using Personal Computer (PC) Windows based systems and Microsoft EXCEL only. The exam must be completed within thirty-five (35) minutes. All examinees are required to have valid Sonoma State University Seawolf accounts at the time of exam in order to sit for the exam.

Typical PCCR Examination Components

The PCCR Exam must be completed within the time limit of thirty-five (35) minutes. Areas the examination may cover include, but are not limited to:

• Retrieving Files and Folders form Local and External Drives
• Saving, Copying, Duplicating and Renaming Files
• Creating, and Renaming Folders
• Downloading Files from a Local Server or the Internet

In MS EXCELL
• Inserting/Deleting Rows/Columns
• Creating and Resizing Text Boxes
• Inserting Text into and Formatting Texts in Text Boxes
• Inserting and Resizing Graphical Files
• Setting Font and Font Size to Variables and Cell Values
• Changing Column Widths and Row Heights
• Setting Cell Value Alignments
• Creating and Formatting Graphical Displays/Charts from Data
• Inserting Special Characters or Symbols
• Entering Labels
• Entering Excel Formulas for Computations
• Copying Formulas using the Fill Handle
• Copying Formulas using Relative References
• Copying Formulas using Absolute References
• Copying Cell Contents using the Copy-and-Paste Method
• Using EXCEL Functions
• Formatting Numbers
• Using Colors for Emphasis
• Revising Graphical Chart Data Series
