Equestrian

Western Horsemanship and Reining Our competition team consists of current SSU students and alumni who are dedicated to the equestrian sport. We travel throughout Northern California and the U.S. competing with the IHSA in Hunt Seat Equitation on the flat and over fences and Western Horsemanship and Reining.

The team is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet, compete, and learn together. Throughout the year there are student lead "workshops," field trips, speakers, and clinics. Topics range from all areas of the equestrian world.

We also accept non-showing riders who are interested in being part of a team environment without the commitment of showing.

The Equestrian Team's first horse show of the season was (Oct16/17). The first day was an English show and the second day was western.

For the English show on Saturday our team brought home our first ever team award. We won Reserve High Point Team! How does that work? ...

When a team member places in their class/division they earn a certain number of points depending on the placing (1st= 7 points, 2nd= 5 points, 3rd= 4 points...and so on). At each show the teams choose one rider per class/division to represent their team and those points earned not only go towards their personal total but the points also get added in to the team total for the day. The award we earned means that of all of the teams represented at the show our team's combined total from individual placings was the second highests...just under Cal Poly SLO. We beat teams like Stanford and UC Davis.

And we got a ribbon!

Our 2009-2010 Season was very successful with both the english and western teams bringing home many blue ribbons. Crystal Larkins and Shelly Davis had an especially successful year. Crystal Larkins was Reserve Champion for the region in her division and Shelly Davis ended the year as the Region Beginner Horsemanship Champion.
We're very excited about the 2010-2011 season and can't wait for it to begin. We will be having informational meetings in the Fall. All three will be held in the Lotus Wellness Class in the Rec Center. See the times and dates below:
Wednesday, September 8th at 10:00 pm (evening meeting).
