Tim Wise the critically acclaimed anti-racist author and activist will be visiting Sonoma State University to share his story and perspectives based on his book, "White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son" on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the SSU Cooperage. This special event is FREE and open to the public.
Tim Wise offers a highly personal examination of the ways in which racial privilege shapes the lives of most white Americans, overtly racist or not, to the detriment of people of color, themselves, and society. Wise examines the breadth and depth of the phenomenon within institutions such as education, employment, housing, criminal justice, and healthcare. Wise provides a rich memoir that will inspire activists, educators, or anyone interested in understanding the way that race continues to shape the experiences of people in the U.S.
Wise is the author of "White Like Me: Reflections on race from a Privileged Son," and "Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White".
"White Like Me is the most important memoir by a white person about how race and racism affect everyday life since Louis Mark Stalvey's, The Education of the WASP."
- James Loewen, best selling author "Lies My Father Told Me"
"In Affirmative Action, Wise does a superb job of making his point and then providing ample evidence, both legal and statistical, to support it..."
- Education Review
