Full-Time Position (Tenure-Track)
Assistant Professor
Starting mid-August, 2008


THE UNIVERSITY. Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students with 500 faculty. The University is organized into six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended Education, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. Within the traditional structure is an interdisciplinary program of liberal studies. The University offers bachelor's degrees in 42 fields and master's degrees in 15.

THE DEPARTMENT. The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies provides a rigorous education leading to a B.A. degree. The department emphasizes high quality undergraduate teaching, advising, scholarship, and service to the community and the University. With about 200 majors, the department is located within the College of Social Sciences. Currently, the department consists of six full-time faculty members, as well as several lecturers. Nearly all courses are four-hour and upper division. DUTIES OF THE POSITION. The typical teaching load is three 4-unit undergraduate courses per semester (12 units total). In addition to teaching and scholarship, all faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve on campus-wide committees.

QUALIFICATIONS. The candidate must be a broadly trained person in the interdisciplinary field of criminal justice. The candidateÕs areas of interest must include law; that person will be responsible forÊteaching the department's core law classes.Ê To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have a Ph.D. in sociology,Êcriminology/criminal justice, political science, or a related field. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply.ÊABDÕs will be considered.Ê Appointment may be made at the rank of lecturer for candidates who are ABD and are anticipating completion of the doctorate no later than December 19, 2008.Ê At that time, and contingent on a successful performance review, the position will be converted to tenure-track. Candidates must demonstrate active involvement in the discipline of criminology and criminal justice studies, superior undergraduate teaching skills, and the ability to relate to a diverse student body.

To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).Ó Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

RANK and SALARY. Assistant Professor. Actual hiring salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience; the salary range is approximately $51,000 - $56,000.
