The National Head Start Family Literacy Center (NHSFLC) is funded by the Office of Head Start, to provide Head Start programs, training and technical assistance in family literacy and math. Family literacy has the following four components:
- Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children
- Training for parents on how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children
- Parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency and financial literacy

Age–appropriate education approaches that prepare children for success in school and life experiences(2007 Head Start Act)
