Language is the Key
NHSFLC is distributing the acclaimed Language is the Key training materials to Head Start grantees. Based on the dialogic reading technique (Whitehurst, et al., 1988), Language is the Key illustrates easy–to–implement strategies that are proven to enhance children’s language and literacy skills. They illustrate research–based practices that families can use to support their children’s growing language and literacy skills.
Three versions of Language is the Key are included on the DVD, each approximately 23 minutes: Spanish, English, and open-captioned English. Language is the Key was developed by Washington Learning Systems.
A Resource Guide is included with the DVD. It provides a brief description of the research and includes reproducible handouts that explain each strategy and its use. The Resource Guide was developed by the StoryQUEST Project and NHSFLC at Sonoma State University.
Language is the Key can be used in parent education meetings and teacher in-service training. A free copy of the DVD and Resource Guide is available to each Head Start Grantee throughout the country. Grantees are then free to reproduce additional copies for their training needs within their own agency.
