Hutchins Full-Time Mentor

Service Description

This exciting new opportunity is available for 15 Sonoma State University students in the Hutchins Liberal Studies Department. Through this program, students have the opportunity to spend one full school year serving the Santa Rosa community as an AmeriCorps member while earning 26 units of credit and completing degree requirements.  Mentors will experience a range of youth service activities.  Each mentor will tutor 4 students one-on-one in the morning hours helping students improve their reading fluency and comprehension.  In the afternoon hours, mentors will be placed in classrooms co-leading activities in our after school program.

Commitment

  • Year of Service: August 20, 2007-July 3, 2008 (minimum of 1700 hours)
  • Weekly commitment: Average of 42 hours per week

Educational Units

  • Students will enroll in 13 units per semester. Most courses will be on-line or at the school site. One course per semester will be a regular SSU class.
  • Fall: EDUC 291 (4 units—at school site), LIBS 312 (3 units—on-line), LIBS 499/waives 304 (3 units—at school site) & LIBS elective (3 units—at SSU) or LIBS 302 for incoming transfer students (3 units—at SSU) 
  • Spring: EDMS 470 (3 units—on-line), LIBS 321A (3 units—on-line), LIBS 499/waives 327 (3 units—at school site) & LIBS 308 (3 units—at SSU)
