California’s Promise
California’s PROMISE supports communities in creating positive opportunities for youth. AmeriCorps Promise Fellows serve as volunteer coordinators by recruiting and training volunteers to be mentors and tutors to local youth. This partnership of AmeriCorps and America’s Promise is designed to ensure that each child has caring relationships with adults, a healthy start, safe places to go after school, marketable skills, and an opportunity to serve the community (the Five Promises). AmeriCorps Promise Fellows also recruit volunteers for local events and national service days and facilitate relationships between youth service agencies.
Comments from California’s PROMISE sites
"The AmeriCorps members from California’s PROMISE demonstrate commitment and dedication to effect change in youth through Volunteer San Diego’s “Stories of Service” project, where youth ARE mentored to facilitate historical interviews with adults … that have served in the military. . . . These enriched historical stories will be showcased to community members, including youth in their classrooms."
"The California’s Promise program . . . provides students [with] access to the Gang Busters Program. This program assists youth to make positive choices in their lives, avoid gangs and gang culture, and resolve conflicts peacefully that occur on the school campus. . . . The program is really making a difference with the community’s most marginalized youth."
