Want a fun way to review for your math classes?  Want to challenge yourself? Participate in this year's Math-a-thon!

The idea of the Math-a-thon is similar to that of a walk-a-thon.  You will get donations from family and friends for participating.  Instead of getting a dollar amount for how many laps that you run around a track or for completing the race, you'll get donations for the amount of math problems you solve or for completing the two hour event.  All the proceeds go to the Math Club.  The person that collects the most money will receive a  prize.

To find out more, ask your math professor. Sign up today in the math office (Darwin 114.)

Unfortunately, SSU has a MB limit for student club websites, so we cannot directly have all our photos on the site.  Our temporary solution is to have an account on photobucket for people to view.

Pumpkin Carving

In the spirit of Halloween, each year we host a pumpkin carving fundraiser.  We received 50 pumpkins, which were graciously donated by Grossi Farms.  Members from the club volunteered to gut the pumpkins and wash the pumpkin seeds, which is definitely a labor of love.  On Thursday October 30, 2008, we set up a table in front of Darwin and sold pumpkins, pumpkin seeds, and math paraphernalia from 9am-4pm. Even though it rained for a bit, we had a lot of fun.  Many students and faculty participated in the gutting, cleaning, carving, selling, and buying of the pumpkins.

Thanks to all who contributed to making this a successful event.

π Day

On March 14, 2008 (3/14) the math club honored the irrational and transcendental number π=3.14159… by throwing pie at our math professors!!  Dr. Barnier, Dr. Brannen, Dr. Ford, Dr. Lahme, Dr. Mendez, and Dr. Morris were our supportive victims.  We thought the weather was going to be against us, but it turned out that the rain decided to show up just in time to wash away the pie from the concrete!  Thank you to all who contributed to this fun day!

Joint Mathematics Meetings

On January 6-9, 2008, ten students attended the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego, CA.  We went to many great talks and met some famous mathematicians!  Also, Dave and Leanna Lofte, James Shikashio, and Mark Ferrando presented a poster at the Undergraduate Poster Session on a topic in graph theory (the distinguishing chromatic number).  To their pleasant surprise, their poster was one of the $100 prize winners!  Thank you to all who donated time and money to make this a successful event.

Whiskeytown

Each year, we go on a camping trip to Whiskeytown Lake for the State of Jefferson Mathematics Congress.  Students and faculty from several schools gather here on the first weekend of October to camp, play games, and of course do math.  This year, it was cancelled due to rain.  Hopefully we'll see you there next year.  For more information about the event, click here.
