BURCH
SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY
Communication Studies Department
Dr. Elizabeth Burch has taught media courses for approximately 10 years in various subjects, including public affairs reporting, criticism, ethics, environmental journalism, scriptwriting, and international communication. She believes students learn in an atmosphere that encourages them to find their individual voice. She began her media career in 1985 producing, writing and conducting research for documentaries in the U.S. and abroad, including in Nepal, India, and Israel. She worked on videos about social issues, such as homelessness, international development, and environmental issues. She has freelanced for KTVU Channel Two News, United Airlines, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and the Asia Foundation. While a writer/researcher for a nationally-syndicated television news show, "Weekend Travel Update," she wrote for the Consumer Travel Guide and Cue Magazine.
Elizabeth has a Ph.D. in Mass Media from Michigan State University, where her dissertation fieldwork took her to India to examine the portrayal of environmental news in the Indian English-language press. She has a Master's Degree in Radio/TV from San Francisco State and a Bachelor's in Music from California State University, Hayward. Elizabeth has published and presented articles examining the media's role in the Gulf War, the impact of "folk TV" on broadcast television and issues related to international environmental journalism, and cross-cultural media aesthetics.
Outside of the workplace, Elizabeth also sings, writes songs, and works on other creative projects, including a new music video. She loves to spend time relaxing with her family in the country or traveling outside the U.S.
