Dear Communications Major;

Please read this letter carefully!!!. The Communications Department has some exciting news for Fall 2007. All Communications classes will become 4 unit classes in Fall 2007. This conversion will include these important changes:

There will be NO CHANGES to the core requirements other than the 4 unit conversion.
Coms 200, 202, 301,302, 315, 402, and 499 are required for ALL majors.

There will be only 3 skills sequences.
Public Relations will no longer be a skill sequence after Spring 2008. There will be new advanced, writing, video & radio classes. KSUN, STAR, SSU-TV and the PR sequence will all become electives in Fall 2007. A two course skill sequence is still required for ALL majors.

The total number of units for the major will change from 46 to 48.
If you are graduating FALL 07 or SPRING 08 you will still need only 46 units. Starting in Fall 08 you will need 48.

The total number of Coms elective units will change from 18 to 12.
Starting in Fall 07, Communications electives must be taken within the department, and Minors in other departments cannot be substituted for the electives. A new list of electives is attached. If you are graduating Fall 07 or Spring 08 you may still use electives/minors from outside coms for your 18 units of electives.

Please do not panic over these changes. If you are graduating next year the only impact will be that you will get more units for each Coms class you have left. This may reduce the number of units you need for electives/free units. If you are graduating next year and plan to take PR as your skill sequence in 07-08, you may still do so. You must be graduating in Spring 08 to take the PR sequence next year.

If you are graduating after Spring 08, you will take one of the new 2-course skill sequences offered from Fall 07 onward. You can still take Public Relations after Spring 08 but it will count as an elective. You will also have to take all your electives from the new ‘Coms-only’ elective list.

Please read all this information carefully before you start asking questions. If you have a specific question, please e-mail your advisor with it. We are eager to make this change as it means we will now offer all courses for the major from within our department. It also strengthens our curriculum by offering advanced skill courses in addition to the electives of KSUN, STAR, & SSU-TV. The Public Relations area is also strengthened because you will develop a specific communication/media skill that you will then ‘apply’ to your Public Relations elective work.
