The Sonoma State University DEMSN program is unable to accept applications for, or admit students to, the Spring 2012 semester due to curriculum revisions underway to reflect current and projected nursing workforce needs.

If interested, prospective students may apply for admission to the Pre-Licensure BSN track for Fall 2011. The 2011 BSN curriculum requires full-time enrollment in four semesters over two academic years for completion.  As a “Second Baccalaureate” applicant, please ONLY apply to the SSU Department of Nursing.  Do not apply to the university which is not currently accepting second baccalaureate applications.  If admitted to the Prelicensure BSN program by the Nursing Department you will be required and allowed to complete the university application process.  For further information about the Pre-Licensure BSN Program and the Nursing Supplemental Application form please go to http://www.sonoma.edu/nursing/basic_bsn.shtml

General Information:

The Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (DEMSN) program is designed specifically for individuals with a baccalaureate or higher degree in a field other than nursing. The key characteristics of this program are:

  1. Eighteen continuous months of study
  2. Extensive use of online education strategies
  3. Utilization of a Collaborative Clinical Education model (CCEM)
  4. Simultaneous integration of undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula
  5. Curriculum designed to prepare clinical nurse leaders.

DEMSN graduates will be awarded a Master of Science in Nursing degree and be eligible to take the RN licensing exam (NCLEX) at the end of the program. Graduates will be immediately employable as staff nurses and have the opportunity to continue a variety of educational pursuits of individual interest as well as market opportunity.

Graduates are also eligible for national certification as Clinical Nurse Leaders through the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Eligibility

Students with a baccalaureate or higher degree in a field other than nursing are eligible.

Admission to the DEMSN Program is will require a minimum 3.0 GPA in college level, nursing major prerequisites:

  • Integrated chemistry (5 units)
  • Human Anatomy (4 units, lab)
  • Human Physiology (4 units, lab)
  • Microbiology (4 units, lab)
  • Statistics (3 units)
  • Human Growth and Development [across the lifespan](3 units)
  • Students will also be required to complete a certified nursing assistant course prior to beginning the program.

Admissions and Records Spring application available Fall.

2. Sonoma State University:
Department of Nursing Application available in the Spring.

Program Delivery

The DEMSN curriculum is presented in five continuous semesters/sessions. Each semester has coursework with companion clinical experience related to the didactic content. Clinical experiences
occur at hospitals and health care facilities in the area with the expert assistance of SSU clinical faculty. The program uses the online learning management system WebCt for optimal student faculty communication. The program is best suited for highly self-directed, motivated and organized individuals.
