The University Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion policy identifies service to the university and the community as two of the four components for faculty involvement. SOE departmental criteria specify the range of expected service (Table 5.3.f-1). Due the small size of the SOE and university faculty, members are called into service on numerous occasions in order to fill needed roles in assisting in the development and operation of the University and School. The School of Education faculty play an integral role in all University Committees including chairing 11 university committees since 2008. Service at the School level demands exceptional involvement at the School, Department, and Program levels including recruitment, admissions, program oversight and development, candidate assessment, and other ad hoc committees that arise out of current needs.
A primary focus of professional education is that of service to public schools in the region. Faculty are involved in collaborating with public school teachers and administrators to improve instructional delivery systems by conducting action research and providing professional development opportunities on a wide range of topics. They also meet annually or bi-annually with SOE program advisory boards made up of local educators. The active involvement of faculty with the professional world of practice in PreK-12 schools is documented in Table 5.3.e-1.
Faculty members provide leadership to professional organizations at local, state, national, and international levels by serving as officers or board members for local schools and professional organizations; as program chairs for national conferences; and members of California Department of Education advisory committees and task forces. They also serve on editorial review boards for state, national and international professional publications as identified in faculty vitae. In a recent survey, faculty identified their involvement in service related activities since 2008. The following tables illustrate the extent of faculty service on campus committees and membership in professional organizations.
