Fall 2011 the Multiple Subject Credential Program will pilot an Urban School Field Experience option for their candidates. The pilot is an effort to give more varied opportunities for teacher credential candidates at Sonoma State. Participants will have direct, hands on experience in an urban setting in the East Bay. Urban schools tend to be categorized as 'high needs', which means the populations they serve have a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and a high percentage of English Language Learners. Students in the Multiple Subject Program had the option of participating in this field pilot, which is structured to offer plenty of time working directly with mentor teachers and university supervisors while student teaching both in and out of the classroom. Paula Lane, Chair of the LEEE Department, is also hopeful that this type of experience will help these new teachers find jobs upon completion of the program.
