Instructor BiographyDr. Jessica Parker is an Assistant Professor in the Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education department at SSU. Having earned her doctorate in Education from UC Berkeley in 2009, Jessica began her tenure at Sonoma State University in the School of Education working with both pre-service teachers in the single subject credential program and in-service teachers enrolled in the MA program in curriculum, teaching, and learning with educational technology.
Jessica studies how secondary schools integrate media literacy into academic literacy learning, and she is currently studying the development and effectiveness of online learning environments. She is the author of Teaching Tech-Savvy Kids: Bringing Digital Media into the Classroom, and has been recognized by the California State University (CSU) system for producing exemplary hybrid and online courses. On a personal note, Jessica grew up in Sonoma and graduated from Sonoma Valley High School.
Co-instructors will help Dr. Parker facilitate the course. The co-instructors are current and former SSU graduate students who excelled in the course in years prior and are currently teaching in Marin or Sonoma counties or at SSU.
Dana ShayDana is a graduate student in the School of Education at SSU, pursuing an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. She is currently an instructor at Sonoma State American Language Institute where she teaches English as a Second Language (ESL). Dana has also been fortunate to teach abroad in Guatemala, Japan, Morocco, Peru, Tanzania and Thailand on short-term assignments. She is fluent in Spanish, and has used this skill as a volunteer ESL instructor with both the adolescent and adult communities in San Rafael. Prior to beginning her career in education, Dana worked as an international business consultant for over 12 years.
Deeann BrunoDeeann retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after serving over 26 years, and is now at SSU pursuing an M.A. in Education with a focus on Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning using Educational Technology. She is an instructional designer with experience with curriculum design, development, and evaluation. Besides being a full time student, she is a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother as well as a lover of humor, music, nature, and travel.
Julia MarreroJulia is currently pursuing her M.A. degree at SSU in curriculum, teaching, and learning with an emphasis in both educational technology and administration. She has been a Marin County educator for over 20 years; and is currently teaching sixth grade math and robotics at White Hill Middle School in Fairfax. Julia is keenly interested in exploring the relationship of technology tools, content, and pedagogy while having a whole lot of fun teaching. She lives in Fairfax with her husband and two teens.
Kaki McLachlanKaki received both her teaching credential in science at Sonoma State and her M.A. in curriculum, teaching and learning--focusing on the relationship between experiential learning and technology. She currently teaches 7th grade science at White Hill Middle School in Fairfax and this year will be launching a digital media class for grades 7/8 and an ed tech essentials class for 6th graders. Kakil lives and plays in Point Reyes Station.
