How do I get information on the Multiple Subject Credential program?
Advising meetings are held every semester to provide program updates and new information and to gather feedback from candidates on their program experiences. It is your responsibility to participate in these meetings. Please check the LSEE web page for dates and times of mandatory advising sessions, as well as the names of advisors with their contact information.
Am I exempt from EDMS 476S?
Students in Hutchins, Integrated AMCS & CALS register for only EDMS 476F, NOT EDMS 476S.
All other students register for both EDMS 476F and EDMS 476S.
When must I pass the required exams?
- CBEST: Pass prior to acceptance into the program
- CSET: Pass prior to acceptance into the program
- RICA: Take after EDMS 463 and as part of EDMS 464 (during EDMS 482F); and
Pass prior to application for MS credential
May I take all of my curriculum courses before student teaching?
May I take EDMS 470 with EDMS 471?
Yes, but it is better to take 470 prior to 471.
May I take EDMS 464 with EDMS 463?
No, 463 must be taken before 464. EDMS 464 MUST be taken with student teaching.
If I want to register for one course during student teaching, which should it be?
Take EDMS 464 with student teaching if you are taking only one course with EDMS 482 F/S.
May I take credential curriculum courses if I’ve finished the prerequisites and I’m applying to the program next semester?
No, curriculum courses are restricted to students who have been admitted to the MS program.
How will I learn to do digital portfolio if I don’t have to take EDMS 476S (Hutchins Blended, CALS and AMCS Integrated)?
The digital portfolio is not a big new assignment. It is a virtual filing cabinet – on steroids! It is fundamentally a place called ‘LiveText’ where you put your work. LiveText also has incredible video resources that you can use with your students as well as other features to help make your teaching life more organized and successful.
The digital portfolio assignments are called Candidate Work Samples (CWS). There are two CWS’s: one in EDMS 476F, and one in EDMS 482F. These assignments ask you to select a few items from the work you have already done in program courses and to write reflections on them that show your development as a professional educator.
CWS 1, completed prior to full-time student teaching, may include items from any program courses you have taken up to that time. CWS 2, completed in EDMS 482F, is also called the Teaching Event or PACT. Teaching about this assessment will take place in EDMS 464.
Each semester there will be help sessions for Flex Path candidates and those who are exempt from EDMS 476S to introduce them to the digital portfolio software and CWS process.
What kinds of things should I save for the CWS from semesters before taking EDMS 476F?
Your course instructors will make suggestions about work to include in your CWS. In addition, here are some pointers for preparing your CWS:
- Save things that show important moments in your learning and/or document your increased responsibility as a teacher candidate.
- Prepare your written work (assignment, plans, reflections, etc.) on a computer. You can do the work in LiveText (that’s easiest) or cut and paste it from other sources.
- Take photos of 3-D projects and make copies of student work and other graphic artifacts. Be sure to remove any student names.
- Consider utilizing the scanners in the SSU library if you don’t have a scanner at home.
Are there guidelines for arranging field work prior to EDMS 476 F/S? First, as a local citizen and taxpayer, you may request observation privileges at any public school. Your curriculum course instructors will advise about making arrangements for doing their assignments. In general, it is wise to first call the school to make an appointment with the principal. Take the FlexPath Letter of Introduction to leave with the administrator and introduce yourself as an SSU teacher candidate with assignments for specific observations and practice teaching. Present your best self; wear appropriate clothes and be on time. If you can, establish a regular schedule of observations with the teacher. Be sure to call the school if you must be absent or late.
Do I receive credit for the observations I do in my pre-EDMS 476F/S field work?
No, you do not pay extra or receive credit for field work done in association with curriculum courses prior to EDMS 476 F/S.
