Scholarships at Sonoma State University are awarded on the basis of academic merit, usually without regard to financial need or state of residency. Students should contact the SSU Scholarship Office in Stevenson Hall, Room 1050, (707) 664-2261, or http://www.sonoma.edu/scholarship/ for information. The application deadline is January 15.
There are several scholarships available that are specific to teaching, please go to http://www.sonoma.edu/education/Scholarships/index.html for more information. Off-campus scholarship information is available in the Scholarship Office in Salazar Hall. Good sites for scholarship searches on the Internet are: FastWeb, FinAid, and the California Student Aid Commission. Scholarship funding is taken into account when preparing a financial aid award package and may reduce other aid. Students are required to notify the Sonoma State University Financial Aid Office when they are awarded a scholarship.
Robert Noyce Scholarship Program for Math and Science Teachers
The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program for Math and Science Teachers seeks to encourage talented Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals who might otherwise not have considered the teaching profession, particularly those from underrepresented groups. Each Noyce Scholar receives a maximum of three years of scholarship support of up to $10,000 per year. In addition, Sonoma State provides support to the scholars throughout the period covered by the scholarships and up to two years after to assist the scholars to reach their goal of a credential and a teaching position. Noyce Scholars are selected by consideration of academic achievement, under-representation and financial need. Preference will be given to those seeking a single subject credential in Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Foundational-level General Science and Foundational-level Mathematics credentials are not included.
F. George Elliott Scholarships
The F. George Elliott Scholarship Fund is an endowment of over $250,000 to the Sonoma State University School of Education. Recipients of these scholarships will be known as Elliott Scholars.
Patricia Nourot Memoral Scholarship for Early Childhood Education
This scholarship honors Dr. Nourot by providing funds to cover educational expenses for students in the Early Childhood Education minor or the Early Childhood Education master’s degree program at Sonoma State University.
H. Andrea Neves and Barton Evans Endowment Fund
Social justice is at the heart of a $250,000 endowment made to Sonoma State University recently by a couple who hopes the gift will spur others to donate "to nudge the University in the direction they would like to see it go."
SSU professor Andrea Neves and her husband Bart Evans are longtime supporters of programs in education, including the building of classrooms in Africa.
This endowment fund supports the H. Andrea Neves and Barton Evans Social Justice Lecture Series at Sonoma State University, a joint venture of the School of Social Sciences and the School of Education.
