Training Course Descriptions
ASBESTOS / LEAD AWARENESS
Instructor:Thomas Sargent, Specialist-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected
Attendees:
Required for all employees who are likely to
come into contact with or disturb materials potentially containing
asbestos or lead. Employees required to
attend this training are in housekeeping and the trades shops. Also
required to attend are technicians in engineering, IT, telecom, art,
physics, chemistry, biology, and theatre arts.
Class Limit: 25
Description: Provides basic identification and awareness information and proper steps to be taken if these materials become damaged.
BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS
Instructor: Craig Dawson, Director of Environmental Health & Safety
Expected
Attendees: Required for all employees who might be occupationally exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
Class
Limit: 20
Description: Topics include a general explanation of the epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases; modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens; use and limitations of methods that will prevent or reduce exposure including appropriate engineering controls, administrative or work practice controls and personal protective equipment; and elements of SSU's exposure control plan.
CONFINED SPACE ENTRY
Instructor: Thomas Sargent, Specialist-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for employees in landscaping, electrical, plumbing, engineering, and any others required to enter confined spaces.
Class Limit: 10
Description: The California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5157 requires that confined spaces are identified, that only trained personnel enter these spaces, and entry occurs only after theappropriate testing is completed. Environmental Health & Safety has set up specific guidelines and procedures for all identified confined spaces.
ERGONOMICS FOR OFFICE WORKERS
Instructor: Craig Dawson, Director-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Employees required to work in one position for long periods of time (e.g., at a computer workstation).
Class Limit: 25
Description: Provides valuable information from proper warm-up and on going stretching to how to set up a workstation. Gain the full support and comfort available from your office equipment while minimizing your potential for injury. This training is a prerequisite for receiving a one-on-one workstation evaluation.
Instructor: Third Party Training Provider
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for landscapers, heavy equipment operators, electricians, and other personnel involved in the activities described below.
Class Limit: 15
Description: The California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 1541, requires all employees who must excavate and/or enter open excavations be trained in proper excavating and shoring techniques.
FORKLIFT CERTIFICATION
Instructors: Chuck Elliott, Automotive Mechanic-Facilities Services and Craig Dawson, Director-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for employees who operate a forklift.
Class Limit: 10
Description: Meets the requirements of California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3657, and is designed for employees who can already drive a manual transmission vehicle. The course is taught in both classroom and hands-on styles. Successful completion of an obstacle course is required prior to issuance of a forklift license.
HAZARDOUS WASTE HANDLING
Instructor: Thomas Sargent, Specialist-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for all employees who have to handle hazardous waste from the point of generation.
Class Limit: 15
Description: Meets the requirements of Title 22, Section 66265.16 of the California Code of Regulations. The training provides essential information on proper handling, container selection, storage, labeling, compatibility/segregation, and personal protective equipment selection and use.
HEARING CONSERVATION
Instructor: Thomas Sargent, Specialist-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for employees who are routinely exposed to continuous or impact noise in excess of 85 decibels.
Class Limit: 15
Description: Meets the requirements of Title 8, Section 5099 of the California Code of Regulations. The training provides information on the effects of noise on hearing, the advantages and disadvantages of different hearing protectors, and the purpose of audiometric testing.
LOCKOUT / TAGOUT
Instructor: Thomas Sargent, Specialist-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for all employees who must work on equipment that has any type of hazardous energy that must be controlled (e.g., electrical, hydraulic, water pressure).
Class Limit: 25
Description: Required by the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3314. This training teaches procedures and approaches to assessing the best means to isolate energy sources, install locks, and tag equipment to avoid accidental restarts.
MEDICAL WASTE
Instructor: Craig Dawson, Director-Environmental Health & Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory for employees that generate or handle biohazardous or sharps waste.
Class Limit: 25
Description: This training covers precautions and procedures necessary to manage biohazardous and sharps waste in compliance with the California Medical Waste Management Act.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Instructor: Thomas Sargent, Specialist-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Required for all employees that utilize personal protective equipment in the course of employment.
Class Limit: 15
Description: This training covers proper use and selection of chemical resistant gloves, puncture resistant gloves, faceshields, safety eyewear, and other equipment.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Instructor: Craig Dawson, Director-Environmental Health and Safety
Expected Attendees: Mandatory annually for all employees who are required to use respiratory protection as part of their job.
Class Limit: 20
Description: Required by the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5144. This course includes a medical clearance, in-class training on selection use, care and limitations or respirators, and a fit test using irritant smoke.SAFETY TRAINING SEMINAR (INITIAL)
Instructors: Craig Dawson, Director-Environmental Health & Safety
Expected Attendees: Employees in Facilities and related services who need to receive several safety training classes at one time.
Class Limit: 20-26
Description: A combination of several important topics with specific application for Facilities and related staff. The training includes:
- General Hazard Communication - learn to safely handle a variety of hazards by using the appropriate safeguards.
- Injury and Illness Prevention Program - study the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee in avoiding accidents and injuries.
- Fire Safety - information on basics of fire safety with special hands-on fire suppression practice
- Back Safety - practice in lifting and other actions that can result in back injury if performed incorrectly.
