EH&S RECOMMENDED FILING SYSTEM FOR MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS)
1. Highlight the chemical name or common name on the first page of the MSDS.
2. In some cases, the department or area that uses the chemical/product is penned in, in the upper right hand corner of the MSDS.
3. MSDS are primarily organized into binders by chemical or by trade name . Every MSDS is filed alphabetically.
* For chemicals, numbers are omitted when filing: e.g.
"2,4-dichlorobenzene" is filed as "dichlorobenzene"
* All letters are used when filing: e.g.
* For trade names, the full product name as listed on MSDS is used: e.g. "Super Window Cleaner".
4. When appropriate, an MSDS should be duplicated and filed by trade name and by chemical (e.g. Chevron diesel fuel should be filed as "Chevron Diesel Fuel" and "Diesel", respectively).
