What is Early Field Experience?

In order to complete the waiver program for the Single Subject credential in a subject matter, you will need to complete 30 hours of "early field experience." These hours may be done as part of your English department coursework, or through arrangements you have made independently. We can also suggest programs that will provide you with the necessary experience.

You do not necessarily have to be actively teaching or participating in classroom activities, although that is often a good idea. Observation and reflection are sufficient. The thirty hours do not need to be completed at the same site.

In order to qualify as Early Field Experience, the thirty hours must be:

* Grade appropriate (i.e. secondary level) and classroom
* In a public school
* Content-specific (i.e. English or Language Arts)
* Supervised by a certified teacher

The following activities do NOT qualify as Early Field Experience:

* Private school employment
* Individual tutoring
* Substitute teaching (public or private)
* Supervision of extracurricular activities or coaching
* Classroom assignments required in EDS 418 or EDSP 433

Please list below the hours you have completed. Provide documentation when necessary.
