Information on English 100A
– 100B: First-Year Composition
Beginning with
the 2010-11 academic year, incoming students who score 147 and below on the
English Placement Test (EPT) will take English 100A – 100B, a
two-semester writing course, in their freshman year. Students scoring
141 and below will take English 100A – 100B and English 99T, a tutorial in the
SSU Writing Center. English 100A – 100B, also known as a “stretch course,”
provides supportive, scaffolded instruction in the
advanced academic literacy skills necessary for college-level work.
Student-instructor ratios in English 100A – 100B courses are kept low to allow
for enhanced student support throughout the year. Course content includes
training in college-level analytical reading skills and expository writing,
with particular emphasis on persuasive writing and research skills.
This course
offers three units of elective credit in the first semester and three units of
GE Area A2 credit in the second. Upon successful completion of the two-semester
course sequence, students will have met their freshman year writing
requirement. Students must complete both semesters of the course in their
freshman year; English 100A is offered in the Fall
semester only.
