Who are the students?
This is an English program designed for active 50+ peers who are searching for creative life styles after retirement and who wish to explore other cultures by themselves with a little knowledge of English that works.
Required English level:
Beginning - Some might have been away from school English for decades; others might have taken some English lessons more recently. All of them can learn together in the “All English” environment.
When and how long:
The 2 to 4 week program is held during the summer months.
Where:
- The campus of Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, as part of the SSALI program.
- Rohnert Park, a safe, quiet, and friendly community, ideal location: convenient flights to San Francisco an hour south of campus, mild weather, beautiful environment in the California wine country.
Where do they live?
The students mainly live with host families in the local community.
What kind of English do they learn?
- Priority given to “acquisition” of basic English skills for simple conversation and overseas travel.
- English for practical use, for communication & interaction with local American people.
- Some basic grammar, but no academic English, demanding homework or tests.
- English for the pure enjoyment of learning and experiencing another culture.
Teaching method for adult learners:
- Talented and dedicated professionals take a communicative and interactive approach.
- Current concepts of adult learning are incorporated in the curriculum, taking advantage of adult learners’ strengths: their maturity and life experiences.
- Travel theme-based lessons in the morning and individual projects in the afternoon such as, meeting people and sharing in areas of interests/strengths.
Class size : 5-15
Special features:
- Weekly field trip
- Local volunteers assist students in the classroom and in their projects, modeling everyday English and providing community involvement.
- Optional short adventure trip to experiment with their English.
Curriculum :
| Week 1 | Warm up, fluency development, introduction to colloquial speech |
| Week 2 | English for traveling and living in America |
| Week 3 | Optional short adventure trip (costs not included in tuition) |
| Week 4 | Optional review and integration/presentations |
- Individual Projects (job or interest related) in the afternoon.
- Project examples: Former teachers visiting local schools, housewives exchanging recipes with American housewives; taking golf lessons, attending classes such as yoga, arts and crafts at the community center or the senior center.Some activities such as classes may involve additional costs.
Other benefits:
University I.D. card to use campus facilities: library, computer labs, gym, swimming pool, tennis courts, etc.
Tuition:
To be determined; includes welcome and farewell receptions, weekly field trips and learning materials.
Program implementation and cancellation policy:
A minimum of five people is required for implementation.
In case the program is cancelled, both the application fee and down payment will be returned. No fees will be returned to applicants who cancel after notification of program implementation.
