Teaching English Conversation and Oral Skills
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university
- Native English fluency
- Two letters of recommendation
- Completion of Sonoma State University short TEFL (Teaching English
as a Foreign Language) course offered in June, 2006.
This requirement
can be waived if the applicant has completed one of the following
or the equivalent: Sonoma State University TESL Certificate or
the School for International Training (SIT) TESOL Certificate (available
at Sonoma State University)
Compensation:
- Enrollment in 1-2 courses/semester at Shanghai Sanda Institute – for
example Chinese, Chinese Culture, Chinese
Economy, Chinese Law. Courses taught in English. Certificate
awarded upon successful completion.
- Stipend to cover living expenses in the amount of RMB 3000
(@$370) per month plus free lunch on workdays
- Travel allowance between Shanghai and California in the amount
of $650
- Free medical care at the campus clinic and medical care at
hospitals off-campus up to RMB 1000 (@$120) per year
- Touring allowance of RMB 1100 (@$133) given at the end of
each semester
- RMB 100 (@$12) per semester for internet expenses
- Two-bedroom on-campus furnished apartment, 2 occupants/apartment
- Office space on campus with computer
Responsibilities:
- Be a member of the Shanghai Sanda Institute faculty/
staff for a period of two semesters – for a total
of 36 weeks
- Academic year begins in late August
- Be present on campus 5 days/week, with activities to include:
- Teaching English conversation and oral skills -
12 class hours/week
- Supervising extracurricular activities – 4
hours/week
- Holding office hours
- Taking Chinese languageand culture classes
- Preparing for lessons
- Coordinating with other teachers
- Attend 1-2 courses in Chinese language and culture
per semester. Tuition waived.
Short TEFL
course to be offered in June, 2005 – This course
will help prepare participants to teach English conversation and
Oral Skills
in China. This course will include demonstrations, theory, and practice.
Participants will receive a packet of teaching and reference materials.
A portion of the course will be dedicated to learning about Chinese
culture, the Chinese educational system, and the structure of the
Chinese language.
Cost: $500
Teaching

Requirements:
- Member of the Sonoma State University Faculty
- Submission of course proposal to be approved by Shanghai
Sanda Institute
- Letter of recommendation from the Dean of the appropriate
school at SSU Compensation:
- Travel allowance between Shanghai and California in the amount
of $650
- Two-bedroom on-campus furnished apartment, 2 occupants/apartment
- Free meals on campus
- Office space on campus with computer
- Full Professor shall receive RMB 6000 (@$725)
- Associate Professor shall receive RMB 5000 (@$604)
- Assistant Professor shall receive RMB 4000 (@$483)
- Experienced Adjunct Instructor shall receive RMB 4000 (@$483)
Compensation:
- Travel allowance between Shanghai and California in the
amount of $650
- Two-bedroom on-campus furnished apartment, 2 occupants/apartment
- Free meals on campus
- Office space on campus with computer
- Full Professor shall receive RMB 6000 ($725)
- Associate Professor shall receive RMB 5000 ($604)
- Assistant Professor shall receive RMB 4000 ($483)
- Experienced Adjunct Instructor shall receive RMB 4000 ($483)
Responsibilities:
- Teach one 3-unit course consisting of 36 hours of classes
- Number of weeks to present the course to be determined
