Alex Hinds, M.A.

Alex Hinds, Director, has directed California planning, building and environmental health departments for over 24 years in Marin, San Luis Obispo, and Lake Counties. Alex was the driving force in the completion of Marin County's highly regarded general plan and sustainability programs, which have received numerous professional awards, including the highest American Planning Association awards for comprehensive planning in California. These programs also received the coveted APA national award for plan implementation. He is one of the founding members of Green Cities of California and past president of the California Planning Foundation. He is also a former Fulbright scholar in Ecuador.

Valentin Alexeeff, DPA, MA, MUP, AICP

Valentin Alexeeff, Coordinator/Instructor, has directed California planning and development departments in Santa Clara and Santa Barbara Counties, and planning, building, and public works in Contra Costa County. He also headed the Institute of Policy and Innovation, developing "best practice models" for Contra Costa County Departments. Recently he was the Government Relations Manager for Build It Green. Valentin has also served on numerous technical committees, including the committee for the Santa Clara Habitat Conservation Plan.

Tom Jacobson, J.D., MPA, AICP

Tom Jacobson, Professor and Chair, Department of Environmental Studies and Planning, has worked as a practicing lawyer and planner throughout California. His professional interests include planning and regulation for sustainable development, growth management, property rights, and environmental regulation. In addition to teaching classes at SSU, Tom was an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, taught for the University of California Extension, and is a frequent presenter at national and state conferences. He recently completed a workbook linking public health and land use for Sonoma County/Cities.
