Other Issues Comments and Responses

1. What are the plans for the land west of the proposed new north parking lot, north of Copeland Creek? Will it be part of this Master Plan Revision? If not, does this affect what is included in this Master Plan Revision?

  • Response: The Master Plan is precluded from addressing property not currently owned by the University. The University does not own the property north of Copeland Creek and west of the proposed new north parking lot. One suggested use of this site is University-related housing.

2 What will be the effect of shifting much of the focus of the campus toward the southwest?

3. Is there a plan to seek input from neighborhoods surrounding the campus?

  • Response: The planning departments of both Rohnert Park and Cotati have been informed of the proposed Master Plan Revision and have been invited to the on-campus workshops. In addition, the workshops have been advertised in both the Press Democrat and the Rohnert Park Community Voice. Also, residents of the areas immediately adjacent to the SSU campus have received hand-delivered notice of the workshops. Note that additional opportunities for "off-campus" input will be provided through the EIR process during the Fall of 1999.

4. The response to #1 is inadequate. Efforts are currently underway to acquire this land; indeed they should be successful before this EIR reaches the CSU!

5. How will the new Tech High School, proposed for a portion of Salazar Hall, affect the campus atmosphere?

Implementation

1. Establish a general policy of rewarding architects and contractors for "Green Building" design. For instance:
· lean concrete for foundations
· state of the art daylighting
· passive solar designs
· solar access
· recycled and reused materials
· sustainably grown wood and fiber products
· waste recycling programs at construction sites
· draught tolerant landscaping
· pest resistant plantings to minimize pesticides
· rainharvesting from roofs for irrigation or cooling water
· building design with recycling collection centers integral to structures to facilitate recycling paper and beverage containers.
· provision for recycling at conferences -- have seen, for instance at the Syllabus conferences, where the organizers provide beverages but no beverage container recycling

6. I am seriously concerned about the proposed "tech high school"! While the advancement of high school students is an admirable goal, I believe that the presence of underage students on campus will serve as a severe limitation to the freedoms which students enjoy currently. A college atmosphere is no place for individuals who are not adequately prepared to handle such a situation. Their "advancement" should not be at the expense of students of Sonoma State! I believe that the students could possibly be censored; not only from certain information deemed inappropriate [remainder of message lost]. If possible, I want to ask that this concern be brought to the attention of the student body! Any help is greatly appreciated.

7. Are you taking sewer capacity into account?

8. What are the reuse options for the existing Commons? Student Union? Salazar Library?
